Q: How did the Atomium come into being?
A: Belgium's architectural pride was designed by Belgian Andr Waterkeyn for the International Exhibition of Brussels in 1958. Symbolizing an iron made of crystal magnified 165 billion times over, the masterpiece sought to confront the destiny of man with scientific discovery.
Comprising nine large spheres joined by several tubes arranged in the configuration of a central cubic system, the Atomium was not originally built with the intention of outliving the year's expo. But due to its stunning magnificence and popularity at the event, it became a permanent fixture of the Brussels skyline. To this day, the star structure of the 1958 show remains a must-see attraction for tourists. Its significance to Belgians matches that of the Eiffel Tower's to the French.
