Emperor's throne sold

A rare Chinese emperor's throne was sold yesterday for HK$85.7 million ($11 million) at a Sotheby's sale in Hong Kong, breaking the auction record for a piece of Chinese furniture.

The imperial carved red sandalwood "dragon" throne of the Qianlong emperor (reigned 1735-96) was sold to a Shanghai-based Chinese buyer in the room, after rounds of bidding took the price well above the HK$20-30 million pre-sale estimate.
