Hitting the high notes

When 18-year-old Shen Lihui applied to college 20 years ago, the musical culture of Beijing Arts and Crafts Academy convinced him to study there.

"When I heard the music, I felt excited and I knew that was where I belonged," Shen says.

The first thing he did at school was to start a band called Sober with like-minded classmates. Like many newborn bands, it was a little awkward and more than a little reckless.
