- China's GDP surpasses $1 trillion, making the country sixth largest in economic volume that year.
- Cheng Kejie, a former vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, is executed in September for soliciting and taking bribes. He is found to have accepted, in collaboration with his mistress, 41 million yuan (US$4.9 million) in bribes.
