-- Deng Xiaoping is reinstated as vice-premier to assist Premier Zhou Enlai in handling State and military affairs.
-- China resumes activities in the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization in April.
-- In August, Lin Biao and principal figures of his clique are expelled from the Party.
-- Deng Xiaoping is appointed chief of PLA General Staff in December. The CPC Central Committee also decides that he would be member of the Political Bureau of the Party Central Committee and of the Central Military Commission.
