Great expat-ations
Name: Samia Asif
Age: 38
Nationality: Pakistani
Time spent in China: Nine years
Why China?
I moved to China about nine years ago, mainly because my husband was already working here. I was also attracted by the cultural similarities between Pakistan and China and wanted to take advantage of China's growing economy.
Doing What?
I run a Pakistani restaurant, Mughals, at the Nali Patio, in Sanlitun, Beijing with my husband. I try to maintain a warm homely atmosphere at the eatery and keep introducing delicious new dishes from time to time.
Language?
Communication with my clients has never been a problem as I can speak three languages - Urdu, English and Chinese - pretty well. I am very keen to brush up my Chinese to a professional level.
Relationship?
I am happily married to Asif Jalil, the co-owner of Mughal's Restaurant. His intelligence, patience and a broader vision have contributed to the successful running of the restaurant. I must say that it was the same perseverance in him that attracted me and eventually led to our marriage.
We have three lovely intelligent daughters, and we treasure the time spent with them.
Food?
We usually eat Pakistani food at home. Sometimes our ayi introduces us to new dishes. While eating out we prefer fast food, and sometimes go for Chinese cuisine as well.
Money?
I am satisfied with the turnout of clients at the restaurant so far. I must confess that running a Pakistani cuisine restaurant in China is far more difficult than in Islamabad, but we have been enjoying the challenge. I am proud of the fact that we in fact introduced traditional Pakistani cuisine to China.
Future?
Business prospects look bright in China. Otherwise, things are not all that different in Pakistan. Seasonal changes are almost the same and greenery is as lush. The warmth and friendliness of the Chinese remind me of my own people back home but I won't let me miss them because I have found a home away from home.
