Microsoft loses legal battle

A US federal court in Texas has ordered Microsoft Corp to stop selling some versions of its Word software in the United States in two months, ruling in favor of Canadian firm i4i Ltd which accused the software giant of violating its patents.

The court slapped more than $290 million in damages on Microsoft, but the injunction is not expected to hurt it as it could easily adjust its programs to comply with the court's ruling, according to industry experts, or settle with i4i.
