Les Choristes
The French movie of the same name tells the story of a music teacher who changed the life of a group of children living in the French countryside after WWII, with the original soundtrack recorded by the Lyon-based Petits Chanteurs de Saint Marc. Early next month the choir will perform its debut concert in Shanghai.

Linkin Park
The band cancelled its Asian tour last year at the last minute due to one of the band members injuring his back. Now Shanghai fans have another chance to catch them, and the new music video for their song featured on the Transformers II soundtrack, at Shanghai's largest performance venue, which has a capacity of 80,000.

Musical Chemistry
The Li Xiaochuan Quartet has reunited to give a jazz concert next month showcasing the diverse cultural roots that blend together to create some of the most interesting sounds in modern jazz. The group, formed in the United States, play a range of music ranges from classical to mainstream jazz and rock. The talented group has formed a unique musical chemistry that makes this performance one that should not be missed.

Asian Youth Orchestra
The Asian Youth Orchestra is made up of young musicians from Asian countries aged between 17 and 27. More than 20,000 people participated in the auditions for the show, which sees the musicians come together for six weeks every summer for rehearsals and tours.

Faust
The classical poem by Goethe is staged in Chinese by artists from Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center. Xu Chengxian plays Faust, who makes a pact with the devil in exchange for knowledge. Zhou Yemang plays the devil.

Candy Secrets

Frente!
This storied Australian band reunited in 2005 and will embark on their first China tour next month. Originally founded in 1992, Frente are known for their lyrical melodies, ballads and the distinctive young voice of their lead singer. The band fell apart in 1998 after releasing two albums. In 2003 the Taiwanese movie "Blue Gate" drew new fans to the band by popularizing their song "Accidentally Kelly Street".

Allegorical Aftermath
Five Chinese artists use different media to present works of art united in terms of their allegorical significance. Gao Shiqiang, Guan Wei, Wang Lang, Wu Junyong and Zhuang Hui use metaphors and symbols to reveal deeper social psychological and spiritual truths in their various pictorial narratives. Some of the allegories employed are well known, others are newly created by the artists to reflect their unique views.

Joyful Roses
Huang Xiyue's water-ink paintings are exhibited at the newly opened Lyford wine cellar on Hongmei Road. Huang paints roses using the thick colors of Western oil paintings blended together with traditional Chinese water-ink techniques.

Next
The Kunst.licht gallery is devoted to the discovery of emerging Chinese photo artists. The new exhibition features five young photographers: Wen Jian, Sun Yanchu, Fei Tian, Tang Like and Ge Fang. Curator Sven Muentel said the exhibition aims to give these aspiring artists a platform to show their work without prejudices.

Shi Long

Local artist Shi Long moved to Hong Kong 19 years ago. He recently returned home to Shanghai with his latest paintings depicting Venetian scenes.The artist ingeniously borrowed water-color painting techniques to present the misty atmosphere of water towns in Italy. His previous series of paintings depicting flower bouquets are also featured.

Outdoor concerts
Three local bands will provide the entertainment during a pair of outdoor shows next month. Zhong Lifeng, and Top Floor Circus and Wasteland top the list. More famous musicians are expected to join a rock and roll concert at the same venue later in the month. Admission is free.
