Big holes in traffic laws
The death sentence verdict for the culprit who killed four people in a traffic accident has touched off controversy among criminal law experts but has won support from the majority of the general public. Experts are concerned about the verdict's fairness; the public is worried about its social impact. Nevertheless, the severity of a sentence for a drunken driving incident with serious consequences is at the heart of the matter.
The culprit, Sun Weiming, was charged with "endangering public security in a dangerous manner." The sentence considered his charges of driving without a license, drunken driving and fleeing after an accident. In the incident, he killed four people and injured one.
The court has enough reason to sentence him to death. He should have known the degree of threat he posed to innocent lives when he drove without a license. In addition, he drove unlicensed for a long period of time and violated other traffic rules on many occasions. He should also have known about the consequence of drunken driving. What was even worse, he refused to stop his car after the accident.
