Fishing for a woman's touch in men's club Aquarium

Fishing for a woman's touch in men's club Aquarium

As something of a dashing dame, perhaps no one appreciates a bar or restaurant that caters specifically to a woman's touch more than I do.

Pretty flowers and candlelit tables set just the right ambiance. But for my male friends aching for a place that does away with the fringe lace and feminine touches, Aquarium by KEE on Nanjing Road West is the place to go for a dose of much-needed testosterone.

Reflecting a 1970s James Bond style, Alfred Dunhill bar and lounge, which opened in May at Plaza 66, should appeal to fans of the exclusive British-based men's luxury brand.

Dressed in aged leather and vintage furniture, this venue provides an intimate setting with dim lighting from floor lamps and warm lampshades, finished off with oak paneling. Oil paintings line the walls and Persian rugs complete this masculine but elegant atmosphere.

Pan-fried sea bass with an infusion of black olive and green asparagus.

Because the venue gets the name from dunhill's iconic Aquarium lighters, several hand-made lighters are on display, adding a sense of edginess to the private room, which is also complimented by the scent of signature dunhill colognes.

Topping it all off at Aquarium is a menu fit for the most carnivorous of patrons, featuring an appetizing Continental menu with the addition of some Asian cuisines. Its Angus beef carpaccio with rocket greens and parmesan (85 yuan) is the starter most likely to win the hearts of diners at first bite with its strong fleshy flavor. Farfalle with sauteed lobster and tomato (150 yuan) is one of the most expensive dishes, but the mouth-watering sauce made from a hearty stew of fresh lobster and tomatoes makes this main well worth the price. The fried cod and broccoli (120 yuan) is also a good choice if you're in the mood for something tender and savory.

Early risers may be interested in the Continental breakfast sets (60 yuan). Some Asian ingredients, like Cantonese dim sum and porridge, are also available while lunch sets (138 yuan) offer a starter and main. Afternoon sets are also available (108 yuan).

With the option of night caps like whisky and scotch from its extensive beverage list, this distinctively male conglomerate is sure to provide that "men's only" club feeling.
