The Northern Kunqu Opera Troupe will stage the classic play Romance of the Western Chamber at the National Center for the Performing Arts.

Directed by Guo Xiaonan, the latest version of the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907) story employs modern techniques to enhance the stage effects. Colorful lights flood the stage, covered by a glass platform. A simple pavilion and pond decorated with peach blossoms and lotus flowers, further complement the set design.

Romance of the Western Chamber is written by Wang Shifu, a famous playwright of the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). This representative work tells the story of young man, Zhang Gong, who puts up at the Pujiu Temple, on his way to taking the imperial examination. One day, he meets Cui Yingying, daughter of a former prime minister who also lives in the temple, and falls in love. With the help of Cui's maidservant, Hongniang, the two pass love messages to one another, evading the watchful eye of Cui's snobbish mother. Overcoming all difficulties, Zhang passes the examination and marries his beloved.
