Put people first in education

Updated: 2009-07-02 07:47 Put people first in education Comment on "Maximizing returns and minimizing angst" As the father of a college graduate in the next year, I appreciate the points made by the author regarding the current educational scenario. Frankly, I think that China is gradually moving towards an "ownership" society, which means you are on your own; marked by features of capitalism, instead of socialism, with Chinese characteristics to some extent. There is no doubt that we have to endure some growth pains in the process of transformation. But the situation in education is basically not conducive for developing the spirit of a harmonious society being promoted by the central government. For that to happen, the departments concerned in the central government should do a better job of putting people first and at the center of all policies. Gao Ming on China Daily website Get value for money in hotels Comment on "Top hotels hit by fall in visitors" Travelers planning to cut back on expenses may be considering cheaper hotels, but when a foreign visitor, who is short of time and unable to speak the language gets into trouble, there is no substitute for a five-star hotel. During my recent stay in Beijing, I happened to lose two ATM cards in a bank cash machine. I was leaving the next day and was frantic. But the Grand Hyatt Beijing front office manager came to my rescue. He made all the necessary phone calls and was waiting at the cash machine to retrieve my cards when the team arrived to empty the machine. He arranged for my cards to be returned to me at the bank's nearby branch. When you get into trouble is when you truly appreciate a five-star hotel. Amy Stone via email Anything for clean air Comment on "US embassy relying on own air monitoring system" (China Daily website) Anything that puts pressure on those in power for policies that improve the environment is welcome. This current obsession with tackling porn while the air is so full of harmful substances seems like a case of misplaced priorities. All efforts should be to give our kids clean air to breathe.
