Accidental firing: 1 dead

A man was killed yesterday when a police official accidentally fired his gun as cops were trying to appease a clash over a real estate dispute in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, the local government said.

According to the municipal government, about 60 people gathered at the construction site of a new building at about 9 am yesterday to protest the mixed-use, high-rise building that would block much of the sun from an apartment building just 10 meters away.

The building's tenants clashed with about 30 construction workers at the site of the project, which is being developed by Guanghui Real Estate Ltd Co, the largest in Xinjiang.

Kudelet Kurban, the deputy head of a local police station, and two other officers rushed to the site to break up the dispute.

Kurban fired two warning shots to disperse the crowd, which proved futile.

"While he was still handling the protesting crowd, Kurban accidentally triggered his gun and the bullet hit Yao Yonghai, a supervisor with Guanghui company, in the neck," a government official said, adding that a probe into the incident is under way.
