Closing in on chronic asthma cause

China Daily | Updated: 2009-06-16 07:52

LONDON: Remodelling of the airways in our lungs may be behind chronic asthma, according to a paper published yesterday in the journal National Academy of Sciences.

The research, by scientists from King's College London and Imperial College London, explains why the structure and function of asthmatic airways are changed and how this contributes to chronic asthma.

Remodelling occurs when small airways in our lungs change over time as our lungs respond to the presence of dust, pollen and mould in the air we breathe. Viruses and bacteria compound these changes.
