Kill Bride
Kill Bride is China's answer to the hugely popular Bridget Jones Diary comedies, with 29-year-old 'plain Jane' saleswoman Du Leisi taking the lead role. Like Jones, Du is embroiled in an apparently lifelong struggle with her weight, her boss and the battle to find a suitable mate. Also like Jones, Du finds no end of ways to publicly and privately humiliate herself, with predictably humorous results.
After experimenting with the world of blind dating, she develops a crush on a guy who has been hired by a nightclub to attract women. Mainland actress Guo Keyu plays the lead role of the nerdy 20-something who is forever daydreaming of Mr Right from behind an awkward pair of black-framed glasses. Guo rose to fame in the 1995 film Red Cherry, which was based on the true story of Chuchu, a 13-year-old girl trying to survive during World War II. Red Cherry was China's biggest domestic box office hit at the time, winning several Oscar nominations and earning Guo the Best Actress award at the 2nd Shanghai International Film Festival. Kill Bride marks Guo's brave new comeback in the comedy genre. It opened on June 12.
