'Grain smugglers' in dock

Eight people are on trial in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, accused of smuggling 8,600 tonnes of grain between April and July in 2008, sources from the Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court said yesterday.

The eight, from three companies in Guangzhou, were charged with working together to forge customs declaration forms and smuggle grain, according to an allegation by the Guangzhou city procuratorate. The city procuratorate declined to specify where the grain was smuggled from and to. The three companies are Guangzhou Suihai Customs Brokers Co Ltd, Guangzhou Huasen Logistics Co Ltd and Guangzhou Yuancheng International Freight Co Ltd.
