When Liu Hong first joined an after-school theater workshop with his classmates, the 14-year-old was quiet, sad, lacked confidence and was picked on easily by others. "His classmates laughed at him because he was slow," recalls Gao Yan, a project manager with Hua Dan, a China-based non-profit organization geared toward social empowerment through involvement in the arts.
