Power of numbers
Discerning trends in any fast-growing economy is always an enormous challenge. The one faced by China's statisticians right now is even more demanding because the world's third-largest economy is undergoing unprecedented structural changes while fighting global recession.
Difficult as it may be, Chinese statisticians should not miss any chance to improve the quality of economic data they compile. At this critical juncture, the accuracy of key statistics will largely determine if Chinese policymakers can respond promptly and adequately to the worst global financial and economic crisis in decades. The very importance of the Chinese economy as a major growth engine for the world economy means that the international community will watch China's growth data closely for early signs of recovery.
Hence, when outsiders express doubts about the country's economic figures, especially figures indicating drastic changes beyond their anticipation, the Chinese officials concerned need not take offence. Instead, they should seize the opportunity to re-examine their own work and reconfirm their findings.
