Work on oilfield pipeline begins

Zhongyuan oilfield, one of China's key energy projects, has begun work on its first pipeline for supplying gas to a fertilizer plant in Henan province.

The oilfield covers 5,300 sq km across 12 counties in Henan and Shandong provinces. It is expected to produce 5 million tons of crude oil and 500-700 million cubic m of gas a year by 1985.

The 148-km-long pipeline will supply 110 million cubic m of gas to a chemical fertilizer plant in Kaifeng, Henan, a year. The plant, now being expanded, will use gas in place of coal to produce 1,600 tons of compound fertilizer a year.

Qingdao plans new projects

Qingdao in Shandong province is preparing to welcome foreign tourists and businesspeople as one of the 14 coastal cities chosen to carry out the country's opening-up policy.

The city will soon begin a number of projects. Plans to build a canal to bring Yellow River water to the city is under consideration, the Qingdao Power Plant will be expanded, a new port area has been planned and work on a connecting railroad spur will start soon, and Qingdao airport's standards will be raised to international level.

Mayor Zhang Kun said the plan is to develop Qingdao into a modern coastal city with light industries, textiles and tourism as its three major sectors.

School breakfast for kids

More than 24,000 pupils of 54 primary schools in Tianjin's seven districts get a light meal during their mid-morning break. The 6- to 13-year-old pupils have milk and bread around 9:30 after the second class.

Boys and girls in Tianjin Experimental Primary School said that because most of their parents go to work early, they cannot get a proper breakfast.

The milk is subsidized and comes from the city's 55 milk retail shops, which also supply the bread.
