Taiwan yesterday confirmed a 52-year-old doctor had tested positive for the A(H1N1) influenza, while an Italian woman in Tibet was given the all clear following tests for the disease.

The doctor, the first confirmed case on the island, is a foreign national who arrived on Monday night, local media reported, and was in a stable condition.

He had flown from New York to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific flight CX831, and arrived at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in Taoyuan County aboard flight CX468 the same day.

Health authorities said he developed a fever during the second flight and was isolated by medics shortly after landing.

Initial tests on Tuesday proved positive for the H1N1 virus, with the diagnosis confirmed yesterday.

Health officials were trying to trace the passengers and crew who came into close contact with the patient during the flight.

One more person tested positive yesterday for H1N1 flu in Beijing, the local health bureau said. It is the city's second confirmed case.

An Italian woman previously suspected of having the deadly influenza strain in the Tibet autonomous region was discovered to be just suffering from seasonal flu, it was announced yesterday.

The Chinese mainland has had five confirmed cases of the virus, while Hong Kong has also had three.
