MADRID: China's last two entrants in the WTA Madrid Open were bundled out in straight sets on Wednesday at the hands of European opposition.
Russia's Dinara Safina, the world No 1 and fresh from winning the Rome title last weekend, eliminated Li Na 6-3, 7-6 (7/2) but the Chinese world No 28 at least went down fighting, preventing the top seed from serving it out while leading 5-4 in the second set.
The Asian challenger forced the contest into a tiebreaker, with Safina coming through on the first of four match points.
