Isn't normal math enough?

China Daily | Updated: 2009-04-25 08:07

It's time to address the rampant spread of the Olympic math education in China, says an article in Oriental Morning Post. Following is an excerpt:

Yang Dongping, a university professor and renowned educator, recently lashed out at the inappropriate popularity of Olympic math education. Yang wrote in his blog that it was already a public plague that totally went against the rule of education, not only harming the health of teenagers, but also adding extra economic burden on families.

Mathematics is aimed at research while Olympic math training is test-centered. Math education in primary and secondary schools should offer students a tool for thinking, while Olympic math training focuses on the instruction of taking test.

Isn't normal math enough?
