Chongqing school boss says sorry for soccer scam

China Daily | Updated: 2009-04-24 07:50

The principal of Daping Junior High School in southwest China's Chongqing finally made an official and public apology yesterday after a week of media attacks for secretly stacking its soccer squad with players to win an international girl's tournament on April 12.

"It's true only three players from the winning team are from our school, while the rest of the 15 members were selected from other areas," said Zhang Jianling, who faces disciplinary punishment from the Education Bureau over the lie.

Officials from the Chongqing government also revealed they would return the championship trophy to the organizing committee.
