Royal couple celebrate
Japan's Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko marked their 50th wedding anniversary on Friday with a series of celebrations.
The royal couple wed on April 10, 1959, when Akihito was crown prince. Michiko, who was the first commoner to marry into the royal family, became a national icon of gracefulness and intelligence. She said she felt insecure and anxious to join the royal family, and the 50 years together were "long and hard at times".
