SHANGHAI: Does the name Feng Shan Ho ring a bell? For many Jewish families that survived the horrors of World War II it does.
They not only remember him but also owe him everlasting gratitude. The Chinese diplomat, popularly known as "China's Schindler", saved thousands of Jews in Austria from the Holocaust by issuing them visas to Shanghai during his tenure as the Chinese Consul General in Vienna from 1938 to 1940.
But it was only after his death in 1997 that his humanitarian efforts came to light through the research done by his daughter, Manli Ho.
