The grand canyon

Spring is in the air and Beijingers are heading to Jingdong Canyon to enjoy a slice of its many splendors. Also called Wulongtan (Deep Pool of Five Dragons) Grand Canyon, this magic spot is situated about 85 km east of the capital. The canyon presents a glorious sight, and from the air the waters glitter like gems inlaid in the triangle formed by the three big cities of Beijing, Tianjin, and Tangshan. The canyon is about 3 km long, and boasts dozens of natural scenic spots. Inside it are numerous caves, deep pools, craggy peaks, waterfalls, and an enormous reservoir.
Hundreds of hectares of pine trees grow in the canyon and nestled under these sturdy pines are small villas and log cabins where visitors can pause for a rest. The reservoir's 30-m-high dam provides deep water for those fond of water sports.
At the end of the gorge is a park with decorated gates and traditional-style buildings. The park is pretty much deserted, especially in winter.
