Khatami may quit election

Former Iranian President Mohammed Khatami said he may withdraw from June's presidential race but only if another reformist candidate is able to pose a strong challenge to country's hard-line establishment.

Khatami told his supporters during a meeting late on Sunday that Iran's ruling clerics may resist his agenda and another influential reformist candidate, former Prime Minister Mir Hossein Mousavi, will face less resistance. A copy of his remarks was made available yesterday.
