UTC hoping to prove a smash hit on campus

South China University of Technology won the first stop of the 2009 Mercedez-Benz University Tennis Challenge (UTC) over the weekend, becoming the first team to qualify for the year-end UTC Nationals in November in Nanjin.

The two-day tournament in Guangdong attracted hundreds of participants from 10 colleges and universities in the province. The host, South China University of Technology, also a provincial collegiate tennis champion, lived up to expectations by beating Guangdong University of Sports in the final. South China University of Agriculture came in third.

The UTC, which lasts for nine months and involves more than 70 colleges and universities from 13 cities, aims to promote tennis at a collegiate level.
