200 million Chinese at school
Nearly 200 million people, or one fifth of China's population, are receiving various forms of regular education, according to the Ministry of Education (MoE).
They include 11.4 million in pre-school classes, 136 million primary school pupils, 46.3 million secondary school students, 1.2 million college students and 36,000 postgraduates. China has nearly 10 million teachers in various educational establishments.
The MoE called for universal primary education by 1990 and establishment of more urban vocational schools and rural agricultural schools.
Anhui seeks trade ties with Lower Saxony
Much can be done to develop cooperation between small and medium-sized German firms with companies in Chinese provinces, believes Mrs. Birgit Breuel, minister for economy and transportation of Federal Germany's State of Lower Saxony.
Some 50 projects have been discussed in China's Anhui province by a visiting German delegation. Breuel said Lower Saxony will provide technical know-how to Anhui, its sister province.
In the past two days, four agreements and a letter of intent have been signed and still more are pending.
