The National Ballet of China will present Raise the Red Lantern, based on famed Chinese director Zhang Yimou's award-wining movie of the same name, at the National Center for the Performing Arts.

The classic tale set in 1920s tells the story of a young girl, who is forced to become the third concubine of the master of a house.

But her secret affections for a young man is discovered by the second concubine. Out of jealousy, the woman tells the master but he reacts with a slap on her face. Desperate and crazy, she tears all the red lanterns in her yard. The furious master orders the execution of all the three - the second and third concubines and the young man.
