Technology imports to boost industry
China last year signed contracts to import more than 600 items worth $600 million to modernize its industry.
Last year, Shanghai alone imported 262 items valued at $216 million, 3.6 times the yearly 1979-82 average. Tianjin last year brought in 157 technological imports valued at $138 million, 6.2 times the 1979-82 average.
In the two cities, leadership in charge of introducing new technology has been strengthened, contacts with foreign counterparts have been expanded, and formalities have been simplified.
Medical exchanges reach new high
Chinese-Japanese cooperation in the medical and pharmaceutical sciences reached a peak last year. 136 Chinese medical workers visited Japan in 53 groups, and 469 Japanese came to China in 89 groups.
Cooperation goes beyond the interest of doctors. In addition to learning Japanese techniques of disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment, the Chinese have been seeking information about modernized hospital and clinic management, and Japanese public health and medical laws and the way they are enforced.
The Japanese, in turn, are interested in Chinese traditional medicine and other medical accomplishments.
