Losing the plot

Throughout World War II there were various plots to assassinate Adolf Hitler. By the summer of 1944, German soldiers, politicians and civilians had solidified into a group with the best chance of success with a plan that would later be known as the July 20 Plot. Based on this true story, the suspense thriller Valkyrie follows a team of high-level German officials who plot together to eliminate the Fhrer. As they execute their plan, they face forces and consequences beyond their imagination. Tom Cruise stars as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, an injured Luftwaffe (air force) hero who collaborates with the German resistance in 1943 and plots to assassinate Hitler (David Bamber). Director Bryan Singer returns to real life from his comic book movies X-Men and Superman Returns, reuniting with screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, best known for his Oscar-winning script in the memorable The Usual Suspects (1995). The top-notch cast also includes Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Carice van Houten, Thomas Kretschmann, Eddie Izzard, Christian Berkel and Terence Stamp. Valkyrie opens this weekend.
