HARBIN, Heilongjiang province: Born in a tropical country without even a single professional ice rink, speed skater Felipe Souza single-handedly kept the Brazilian flag flying at the 24th Winter Universiade in Harbin this week.

Souza stands as the South American country's only representative at the biennial sports gala, held this year at a former colonial outpost of Imperial Russia where ice and snow sculptures are the main tourist attraction.
