HARBIN, Heilongjiang province: Born in a tropical country without even a single professional ice rink, speed skater Felipe Souza single-handedly kept the Brazilian flag flying at the 24th Winter Universiade in Harbin this week.
Souza stands as the South American country's only representative at the biennial sports gala, held this year at a former colonial outpost of Imperial Russia where ice and snow sculptures are the main tourist attraction.
"This is the first time for Brazil to compete in the short track at a Universiade," the 27-year-old told China Daily. "It's a good start. It's important to participate and it's a (positive thing) for the future."
