How well do you know Uncle Oscar?

Did you know how Oscar got his name? The 35cm-tall statuette was named by Margaret Herrick, the Academy librarian, who said in 1931 after seeing the statuettes: "Why it looks like my Uncle Oscar!" The name stuck. The Academy Awards ceremony telecast begins at 9 am in China today and here are some more fast facts:

Early days

The awards began in 1929 and best actress and actor awards went to Janet Gaynor for Seventh Heaven and Emil Jannings for The Last Command. The Jazz Singer was honored with a special award as the "pioneering outstanding talking picture, which has revolutionized the industry". The Academy had ruled that it was ineligible for best picture because it would be unfair to let sound films compete with silents.
