Time for the navvies to get savvy

Jobseekers attend a fair on Feb 11 in Fuyang, Sichuan province, which has a population of 9 million people, about 2 million of whom are migrant workers, according to local media. The global economic slowdown is taking its toll in China, especially for rural workers who usually flock to cities to build office towers, clean streets and staff factories, with a senior official saying last month that around 20 million migrant workers had already lost their jobs. CHENGDU: Tang Xingqiang had every reason to feel confident about his prospects when he moved back to his home province of Sichuan last December. With his 20 years' experience working in some of the biggest cities in China, he believed there would be jobs for the taking on his return.
