US to pay WWII veterans

More than 60 years after World War II ended, around 18,000 surviving Filipino veterans will receive a cash payment from the US as part of its financial stimulus package, Philippine officials said yesterday.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo said the nation shared a "profound sense of joy," in seeing the service of these veterans finally recognized after years of lobbying the US government.
