Green tinge to song of the times

The times they are a-changin, wrote Bob Dylan 46 years ago. It charged us with new energy in the '60s and '70s. It made us believe in the future, a better future. Today, the song seems to have acquired an altogether new meaning.

But these are post-modern times - the age of machines and gadgets. We need not start swimming even if the waters around us grow. There'll always be a lifeline. It's a different matter altogether that every year floods still claim thousands of lives across the world, not sparing even those in the most advanced countries.

We like to think that the days of depending on the moods of nature for a good harvest are history. We can draw water from canals and deep wells to irrigate our land. We can do without normal rainfall for at least some time. Or, can we?
