Robert Louis Stevenson's 1881 classic Treasure Island gave birth to the pirate genre's most popular images.

However the three Pirates of the Caribbean movies featuring loopy captain Jack Swallow, played by Johnny Depp, introduced pirate adventures to a new generation of fans.

Stevenson portrayed pirates as murderous and cruel but later books, such as Rafael Sabatini's The Sea Hawk and Captain Blood, romanticized them as swashbuckling adventurers.
