SHANGHAI: A former district chief was sentenced to life in prison yesterday after he and his wife accepted 5.9 million yuan ($863,800) in bribes and accumulated unjustified assets worth 12 million yuan.

Wearing a black jacket, 51-year-old Kang Huijun, former vice-governor of Shanghai Pudong new area district, did not appeal the verdict at Shanghai No 1 Intermediate People's Court.

Neither did his wife, Wang Xiaoqin, 50, who received a sentence of five years for her part in the scandal.
