Stop wasting public money

China Daily | Updated: 2009-01-23 07:37

Officials will not stop eating with public money if there is no mature budget management system in place, says an article in China Youth Daily. The following is an excerpt:

Officials in Bengbu, Anhui province, have reportedly spent a large amount of government fund to dine in a five-star hotel for four times recently - the lowest bill came to 3,900 yuan, while the highest was 11,822 yuan.

The huge dining bills have angered the public amid the current financial crisis. In the face of factory closures, massive layoffs and reduced financial revenues, civil servants, who are supposed to take the lead in weathering the financial turmoil, have shown no sense of thrift and instead splashed tax-payers' money.
