A tale to warm the heart but not the body

When I rented a tumbledown farmhouse in the northern suburbs of Beijing last June, I was smugness personified.
The warm weekends we spent out there, climbing trees, breathing fresh air, building bonfires it was perfect for my 3-year-old boy and the friends who came up with us.
"It'll be cold in the winter!"
