PLA contributions called 'remarkable'

Remarkable achievements were recorded in 1983 by the Chinese People's Liberation Army in its support for the country's socialist economic construction.

Officers and men devoted more than 22 million workdays in the year to urban and rural economic construction, of which 4.2 million workdays were given to supporting 8,200 State and local projects. For example, army units helped plant 47 million trees and afforest 2,360 hectares of land. They have also given technical training courses for 114,000 local technicians and trained 5.24 million militiamen.

Colleges to take more students

China's regular colleges this year will enroll 430,000 more students than last year and the secondary technical schools will take in 500,000, an increase of 30,000, Vice-Minister of Education Huang Xinbai said. The country will take in 23,500 postgraduates in 1984, 51.6 percent more than last year.

In addition, 54,000 people will be admitted to colleges and college courses for adults and 800,000 to adult secondary technical schools, an increase of 31.5 percent and 82.8 percent respectively over 1983.

Hydropower spreads through Hunan

Hunan province now has more than 9,000 small hydroelectric power stations with a combined capacity of 910 megawatts.

These small power stations generated 2.29 billion kilowatt-hours last year, an annual increase of 4 percent. The 73 power stations built in 1983 were a contributing factor.

Hunan has 10 of the country's 100 exemplary counties in providing more electricity for the countryside by building power projects and generators on their own.
