Kudos for naval deployment

Comment on "Naval deployment to the seas off Somalia" (China Daily, Dec 22)

I'm pleased to see our naval deployment to the seas off Somalia, because the action not only can protect our citizens from being attacked but also demonstrates China's emphasis on human rights. We always put people's lives first.

Christmas in time of recession

Comment on "World economies limp toward Christmas" (China Daily website, Dec 24)

This Christmas is even colder because of the economic recession. What's worse, we even don't know when it will come to an end. Would it be as destructive and cruel as what happened in 1929? There might be some solutions. Who knows?

The lingering recession is a big challenge to us. We can't succumb to the crisis. The decreasing consumers' demand threatens job opportunities and investment. We must take cautious measures to cope with it

Business analysis of Shaolin 'expansion'

After expanding the temple's influence overseas, Shaolin Temple abbot Shi Yongxin strides again for "industry reorganizing" internally as he sends monks to work at four temples in Kunming, Yunnan province.

I shall say that by promoting the "brand" of Shaolin temple with taking all those commercial steps, Shi has been not only an eminent monk, but also a business master.

However, whether steps to achieve such management expansion work depends on some factors.

First, it is essential to have a legendary monk, just like a business team leader, to lead Shaolin monks and coordinate between them and other local monks.

On this key appointment, Shi was clear in his mind so that he dispatched his student Shi Yanshuo who has mastered both the martial art and medical knowledge developed by Shaolin over centuries.

Second, this dispatched team must have talents that can handle all the affairs of commercial promotion, operation management, cultural promotion, and publicity. So we see the Shaolin team has four monks specializing in paint, Buddhist service and management.

Then the move must offer a decent reason to earn a friendly external environment. According to a statement from the temple management, Shaolin made the decision to take charge of the four temples to bring Shaolin's martial art and medical knowledge to serve local people.

Moreover, Shi is also far-sighted as he has planned to recruit followers from southeastern provinces and even Southeast Asian countries so that a newly-combined Buddhist culture can be rooted deeply in local places for long.

In short, Shi has kicked a good start, let's wait to see what he can do further.
