Demand for passports soars as foreign currencies slump

Thousands of residents in Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang province, are queuing to apply for a passport as the cost of overseas tours plummets amid the global financial crisis.

Thousands of locals have swamped the Harbin Municipal Public Security Bureau in the past few days, with many having to return the following day because of extremely long lines.
