Other ways to show anger

Comment on "Bush on farewell visit to Iraq dodges flying shoes" (China Daily, Dec 15)

I can understand the journalist's feelings. His behavior must have been the result of his patriotism. No one can deny that the Iraq War has brought grief and disaster to its people. So what the journalist did is understandable.

However, he should have chosen a better way to show his dissatisfaction.

It was very sad to see how an Iraqi citizen was expressing his feelings about his motherland being trampled by the war. He was just like any other Iraqi, helpless to prevent the United States from further destroying his country.

This is definitely not the type of "democracy" and "human rights" the Iraqis want under the US invasion and occupation.

The Iraqis should rule their country themselves.

The Iraq War led by the United States has killed thousands of Iraqi people. However, US leaders and its media insist the war is for democracy, justice, liberty and human rights. This in fact is a big lie.

We can see how it is dealing with the current financial crisis, merely printing trillions of dollars to pay off its debtors.

It is really ridiculous of the US to do whatever it wants using freedom and human rights as an excuse.

Chinese have values, too

Comment on "Sarkozy's 'European value' not accepted" (China Daily, Dec 17)

French President Nicolas Sarkozy always preaches his "values". What on earth do his values mean? Does he respect Chinese people's "values"?

What we want is to protect our country and keep our territorial integrity. We won't allow other countries to interfere with China's internal affairs.

Learning real estate lesson

The sluggish real estate market is now affecting the coffers of local governments.

In past years, the real estate market was a boon to the local governments as they sold land to commercial developers to boost income. Today, it is a different story as fluctuating home prices have made developers wary of buying land.

I have noticed that many cities and counties, whose development relied on real estate, are reporting a considerable slow down in economic growth.

Officials in these places are getting increasingly anxious about the dip in their GDPs, and are considering various plans to revive the real estate market. GDP growth is an essential gauge in the performance evaluation of these officials.

Why not think about other options, rather than struggle to boost the real estate market? Why not let those wealthy housing developers who have reaped massive profits suffer for a while?

An article I read last year said that an economy should never be dependent on a real estate industry that develops on high housing prices and high tax rates. Instead, it should focus more on developing hi-tech industries.

Reasonable housing prices eases the burden on people, and it is their happiness that is vital to a harmonious society.
