Born, on Sept 22, 1976 on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, Ronaldo began his career with Cruzeiro in 1993, transferring to PSV Eindhoven the following season.
He won his first cap for Brazil as a 17-year-old in 1994 and helped the side to win the World Cup the same year.
