Among all US presidents to have close ties with China, it is almost certain that George H. W. Bush has the closest.
As US Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) in 1971, Bush witnessed China resume its UN seat and membership of the UN Security Council.
In his memoirs, Bush describes China's return to the United Nations with a sense of loss after the UN's recognition of the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China, while close US ally Taiwan's use of the name "Republic of China" was withdrawn.
