A rural cooperative medical scheme introduced in 2003 has drawn nearly 90 percent of 800 million Chinese farmers by the end of this year.
Under the program, a farmer pays 10 yuan a year while the state, provincial, municipal and county authorities jointly contribute 40 yuan to the cooperative fund.
The Chinese government aims to cover all rural residents with the medical scheme by 2010, the Ministry of Health has said.
