Cinema boom spreads to countryside

Latest figures show that a total of 8,000 cinemas have been set up in China's small towns since 1978, and 100,000 film projection teams now work in rural areas.

In 1982, audiences totaling 19 billion attended 24 million film shows in China's countryside. On the average, each farmer saw 24 shows during the year.

Collective funds have been used to set up 90 percent of the cinemas. The remaining 10 percent was government money.
