Kaiser Kuo and his band Chunqiu thrashed the socks off Nanning last week but we caught him online at 9 am, enjoying an espresso at Biz Caf, skyping with the wife and kids. The 42-year-old admits it's not very rock 'n' roll.
"You caught me red-handed in an act of unpardonably bourgeois indulgence," says the New Yorker, who has made a name for himself in Beijing as a magazine columnist, and digital expert at one of the world's blue-chip advertising firms. Kuo was nearly famous as a guitarist in previous band Tang Dynasty but adds this is his first "real" road tour.
Kaiser Kuo: We're traveling by train - generally hard-sleeper, six to a cabin. Lugging all the gear around is a pain. We travel with the minimal amount but it's still pretty taxing to schlep stuff all over China.
China Daily: Are you making ridiculous amounts of money from this tour?
